Snorkeling: Where You can "Swim with the Fishes!"

Do those "Flipper" reruns and old Jacques Cousteau
documentaries awaken a longing to bring what you
see on the television screen to life?
Snorkeling allows you to get a close-up perspective of
the undersea world. You get to see ocean life in its
natural habitat. If you'd like to dive but you're on
a budget, snorkeling can provide a great alternative.
Some of us, though, prefer snorkeling to scuba diving.
West Palm Beach, Florida is a popular snorkeling spot.
Here, you can see scorpion fish, nurse sharks, Atlantic
guitar fish, horseshoe crabs, sea turtles, parrot fish,
and more. Swimming is easy in fairly shallow water. The
city offers other wonderful amenities, too. You'll find
beautiful beaches, good hotels, and a state park all in
close proximity.
Popular cruise destination and banking haven Grand
Cayman offers an opportunity to swim with the population
of friendly stingrays that live in the warm Caribbean
waters surrounding the island. If cruising, you can likely
find a shore excursion that features this. If you're
staying at a local resort, check with the concierge.
When Charles Darwin visited the Galapagos Islands,
he didn't have the opportunity to see what you will
on a snorkeling trip here. Most of us know about the
exotic creatures that populate the islands themselves,
but there are populations of equally exotic creatures
populating this Pacific Ocean paradise that makes up
the westernmost territory of Ecuador.
Snorkeling is a family-friendly activity that anyone in
good health who is able to swim can take advantage of.
Exercise common sense when snorkeling. Don't swim alone.
Protect yourself from the sun. If you plan to snorkel in
open water, do so under the watchful eye of an experienced
guide. Choose excursions and water conditions for
snorkeling that don't exceed your skills and conditioning.
Observing basic rules of water safety will allow you to
enjoy snorkeling as a lifelong activity.
